PROJECT INFORMATION
Winner of PAM Award 2004 Public & Civic Building Category
The public toilet or conveniences, though a humble instrument is a microcosm of society at large. It is a functional instrument, social expressions, economic developments, cultural character, hygiene standards and environmental factors. The neglect in the architectural design aspect such as the handicapped, privacy, ventilation, comfort, security and culture has added to the deterioration of its function. Poor toilet design and management, user’s habits and etiquettes show the slice of the people’s morality and the spiritual culture of that country. A new direction and character in the public conveniences should be established for the future needs. This typology of restroom will exist with good design approach, public education on usage and good maintenance and health management. With that, a design that speaks culture and etiquette was brought forward in the project together with ADP’s design principle of natural context.
